Mike Hegarty was a former Merchant Navy Captain and volunter lifeboat crew with Poole Lifeboat and Humber Rescue after many years in the shipping industry he moved to West Cork and intially ran a small country bar and eventually established Carbery Cottage Guest Lodge with Julia. Mike & Julia laterly worked within the music industry, in conjunction with the guest house and various items are displayed around the house. Mike is a keen cook prepares  most of the savoury dishes and great breakfasts whilst Julia concentrates on the pastries and front of house service.
Mike is also a qualified Dog Trainer and classes can be arranged.

Julia Clothworthy Bird prior to moving to Ireland was Director of The Theatre Royal Bath and one of her many success stories within the theatre world was the establishment of Peter Ustinov's one man show. (Memorobilia adorn the walls of Carbery Cottage, mostly the cloakroom walls!) . Julia is also an artist some of which are displayed
